Citizens' Advice

Citizens’ Advice offers people information on their rights - including benefits, housing and employment, and on debt, consumer and legal issues.

Citizens’ Advice aims to empower people by providing them with the information they need to solve their own problems and to signpost them to appropriate advice when necessary.

People can access help and advice by visiting one of the Citizens’ Advice Bureaux or logging on to www.adviceguide.org.uk.

The Citizens Advice service is a network of independent charities.

Community Legal Service Direct

If you live in England or Wales and want free high-quality legal information to help you deal with your legal problems, Community Legal Service Direct (CLS Direct) can help. The service is available by calling 0845 345 4 345 or by visiting the website at www.clsdirect.org.uk.

You can:

  • Read free legal information leaflets or legal help factsheets
  • Search for a high-quality local legal adviser or solicitor
  • Search for legal information from a selection of the best advice websites in the UK
  • Find out if you qualify for legal aid by calling their national helpline on 0845 345 4 345 for free advice about benefits, tax credits, housing, employment, education or debt problems.

If you live in Scotland please visit The Scottish Legal Aid Board for further help. If you live in Northern Ireland please visit The Northern Ireland Legal Services Commission for further help.

Establishing, maintaining and developing the Community Legal Service (CLS) is the responsibility of the Legal Services Commission. In 2003/04 the Commission spent around £900 million through the CLS, helping over a million people with their civil legal problems. Partners such as local authorities and lottery funds provide further support and funding.
